THE HEAD

Marking out the polystyrene block from a pre-drawn template.
The first cuts . . . . .
From rough 2D to rough 3D.
Swapping saws and knives for sandpaper to refine the shape.
Starting the undercut for underside of 'dome' and the neck.
Coating the polystyrene in Jesmonite ® to seal and protect from the resin.
First layer of fibreglass resin with black pigment paste included being applied.

First layer of fibreglass resin completed.
The 'almost finished' dome.

And now for something completely different . . We had to cut back the shiny paintwork with wet & dry paper so that glues would stick to it when adding features. It will go back to being super shiny once we've finished the whole head. We couldn't resist starting with the teeth.

Building up the detailed pipework under the dome.

Followed by a base coat of mixed acrylic and latex.

Jaw tendons: It's what they used on the film, so why look for an alternative! However we chose black ones as we thought they looked more in keeping and wouldn't discolour.
Of course they had to have the lubricant washed off thoroughly otherwise they wouldn't stick!
Stuck in place using liquid latex.
Taped, stretched and pinned into place, again using liquid latex.
A twist on the 'chest-buster' baby Alien, an adult 'bin-buster'
Lips: these were simply strips of pigmented latex that had been poured onto a metal tray and left to dry. Strips were cut and stretched into place. being thicker, these were glue-gunned in place to speed things up.
Head attached, at last!
Always embrace your work!
Painted and looking shiny again. The dome was painted with non-drip gloss to give depth of shine and to avoid brush marks.
Finishing touch: glue gun drool.
